Just as any lil’ girls out there would do, when my little sister and I got a hold of a bottle of nail polish, we decided to put it on ourselves. And not on our nails, but on our faces as our mother napped one afternoon. We’ve seen pictures of how make-up was applied and seeing how our older cousins applied their make-up, we decided to put the fingernail polish on our cheeks and on our eyelids like it was eye shadow. I applied the nail polish on my sister’s cheeks and then on top of her eyes, not knowing that was not where you apply nail polish. And then she did the same to me. When the nail polish began to dry up, our eyelids got stuck together. We tried to open our eyes, but we couldn’t. We started to cry loudly not understanding what was happening to us, which woke our mother up. I’m sure she woke to two little girls with red smudges across their cheeks and around their eyes. After scolding us for what we did, she got a warm wet washcloth and she began wiping our eyes free of the nail polish. We were able to see again, which we thought would never happen again.
This might have been the first time we got the speech of how we shouldn’t wear make-up. She told us the Creator made us the way we look and that we shouldn’t try to alter our looks.
