In high school, I can’t help but recall a highly intense, exciting, edge-of-your-seat volleyball game. I was having the time of my life playing, bumping, dinking, spiking, and serving when the ref had to stop the game because I wasn’t wearing the proper uniform attire. And I was surprised he noticed because this was the first time, out of all the games I played, someone noticed that I was wearing a yellow tee underneath my jersey. I was immediately told by my coach to go to the locker room and take it off and come back into the game. Luckily, a friend, who was also my teammate followed me into the locker room where I convinced her that I went without a bra that day because I had read somewhere that going without a bra every once in a while was good for your health. She must have believed me because I then convinced her to lend me her bra, the one that she was wearing, and she did. We ran back out into the gym with me wearing her bra and her wearing my tight yellow tee. It was just easier to convince her about what I had read instead of trying to explain that my mother couldn’t afford underwear for me. I couldn’t even tell you what size underwear or clothing I wore around that age because I never got any new clothes. However, I remember I had the time of my life playing in that volleyball game. I don’t remember if we won or not, but I’m sure we did. It was also a good thing I had small boobs because if I didn’t, the tight yellow tee wouldn’t have worked for me all those times I played and that was the first time I had gotten caught.
